Peaches Christ presents Bearbarella

I said it would happen again…and I meant it!

Following my successful application to the Film Audience Network North West Central, in response to a call for proposals to support the British Film Institute and their ‘Days of Fear and Wonder’ season of science fiction, San Francisco drag superstar, filmmaker, and cult (movie) leader Peaches Christ returned to the UK following her infamous British debut that I produced in 2010, with an out-of-this world event celebrating the 1968 sci-fi masterpiece Barbarella, directed by Roger Vadim.

But Peaches Christ didn’t merely screen the film, she invited audiences to join her and her cast of drag aliens for a fully immersive and interactive experience in presenting her stage-show parody ‘Bearbarella’ in a triple-city hop; beginning in Belfast, Northern Ireland, heading to Glasgow, Scotland and culminating in Manchester, England. Starring San Francisco’s own Lady Bear in the title role, a larger than life queen who’s tasked with saving the Queerniverse from a wicked, knife wielding villainous, The Great Tired, played by Peaches herself.

Additional roles were filled by fellow San Francisco bon-vivants Hugz Bunny and Shemantha, UK performers the Ultra Violets, Cheddar Gawjus and Anna Phylactic, myself as Dildongo plus special guests en route in each city. We were also complemented by an exclusive ‘live’ insert (cue comedic timing from Lady Bear in paired conversation) featuring Alaska Thunderfuck 5000 as The President of Earth.

Ms. Christ strongly encouraged audience members to dress up in their best Barbarella inspired couture and participate in the Orgasmatron Challenge where Peaches invited the best dressed attendees up onstage for the chance to be publicly pleasured. All three nights sold-out, and in Belfast we were reported to the authorities prior to our arrival on charges of blasphemy! We were thrilled to be tarnished so, and there wasn’t an empty seat in the house…

This event was part of the nationwide BFI Sci-Fi season Days of Fear and Wonder and was supported by Film Hub NWC, proud to be a partner of the Film Audience Network.
