Wandering around Manchester Town Hall today on my lunch break, hoping that inspiration might strike to help me build upon my commission by Larkin' About and Library Theatre Company for the Manchester Histories Festival. This is very much how my brain feels right now. A swirling pool whirlpool of research and ideas that needs to settle before I can row a boat out and sink a hook. Gorgeous windows. Glad I don't have to clean 'em. So many restricted spaces means that there isn't going to be much opportunity to run amok, exploring oubliettes, which is no bad thing. I must be disciplined. I must be static. Static doesn't have to be bad. I did take a fancy to a particular window alcove. I may go back with a large beach towel to claim my spot...

Palaces build underway

Over the past six months I’ve been helping produce a new sculptural work from artist, friend and colleague Gina Czarnecki. I’ve blogged about it previously and you can read more about it at the official website, but PALACES will be a fantastical, fairytale castle reminiscent of bone and coral growth, clad in potentially 1000s of baby teeth donated by the public.

Here are a selection of the latest pictures from the workshop where PALACES is taking shape… you can see the towers rising ever higher and adopting their unique shapes, each one totally different from the other. The exterior is undergoing daily moulding and manipulation to mimic organic growth, with the additional help of poured resin for a cooled lava effect.

Most striking of all is the central archway, large enough to put your head inside once on display and view the rows upon rows of teeth nestled like jewels within. Onwards and upwards!

I asked Scott for his thoughts on how I might allow an audience to share in the tunnel-vision, blurry-edged, murderous psychic visions of Faye Dunaway in The Eyes of Laura Mars, perhaps something along the lines of a low-cost virtual reality headset. He went away and came back with this. What do you think? It's patent pending, so don't go robbing it. We're already thinking of ways to spend our millions...
